TCB 2001 ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Date: 10/31/2001
The following are accomplishments of the Tulsa
Council of the Blind from January 1, 2001 to the date of this document:
1. We held a
fundraiser, which brought in almost $400.00. This fundraiser was put on and
worked by TCB members.
2. We’ve had
7 programs at our monthly meetings including:
·
Mayor M. Susan Savage.
·
2 city councilors.
·
Cynthia Staab/Shirl Mcelyea from Tulsa Transit.
·
The Parkview school choir.
·
Lauren White, Executive Director of Oklahoma League for the
Blind.
3. We have
again increased our involvement in local commissions/boards:
·
1 member on the Tulsa Transit board of directors.
·
A total of 2 members on the Mayor’s Commission on the
Concerns of Tulsans with Disabilities.
·
1 member on the Tulsa Police Department Community Relations
committee.
·
1 member on the Tulsa Human Rights Commission.
4. We
purchased a CCTV for a visually impaired student in the Tulsa Public Schools.
5. We have
been included on the taskforce looking at forming a regional transportation
district. This committee consists of Tulsa and surrounding community leaders,
transit officials, and TCB.
6. We have
communicated with many of our city leaders on several local issues:
·
re-writing the local taxicab ordinances.
·
Projects to be included on the most recent 3rd
penny sales tax.
·
Continued to push for a re-write of the white cane
ordinance.
·
Continued to support funding for transit.
6. Organized/held
a reception for city leaders and the Tulsa Transit board of directors. The
purpose to promote continued strong funding in the 2001-2002 Tulsa city budget.
7. Held 2
social events at no cost to TCB.
Again,
you can see from this list that Tulsa Council of the Blind is on the move and
active. I still hear that we just don’t ever do anything. I’d like the people
who feel this way to review the list above, review last years list of our
accomplishments and then see if they can truly say that we don’t do anything.
I also want to thank those who
have made this possible. That is, the members. If it weren’t for the active
members, none of these things would occur. We are certainly interested in
accomplishing more, and to do that, we need your participation. We’ve accomplished
a tremendous amount over the past 18 months with a small number of people. Just
imagine what we can accomplish with even more members. If you’re truly
interested in improving our community and those surrounding Tulsa for the
blind/visually impaired, come join us and we’ll find plenty for you to do.
