Meeting Information

The Heartland Council of the Blind meets on the first Saturday of each month at Deaconess North, 5701 N. Portland in the basement. Meetings begin at 1:30 p.m. Special dinners and related events may occasionally be held at the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, 300 N. E. 18th Street, Oklahoma City. Officers are elected in September at our annual meeting.

Past programs include information about and practice of chair exercises, the numerous volunteer community activities of the Cross Town Church, adaptive low and high tech devices used daily by our blind and visually impaired members, how to get around in an emergency room--just to name a few of our monthly presentations.

The Heartland Council believes in giving back to the community and also thrives on doing things together.  Once a month HCBers go bowling and we recently participated in a bowl-a-thon with the Tulsa Council of the Blind.  Past activities include a White Cane Safety Awareness Day walk in Brick Town, a CPR class, workshops on what to do and how to prepare for the loss of a loved one, partnering with the Oklahoma Rehabilitation Council to sponsor a legislative candidate’s forum, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army and adopting “angels” from the aforementioned agency’s Christmas tree.

The HCB is hosting a special event called Dining in the Dark at the Oklahoma History Center on Saturday, October 4 from 6:00-9:00 P.M.  Participants wearing blind folds will experience a delectable dinner, socialize with people at their table, listen to melodic music and hopefully expand their other four senses.  Tickets are $50.  For more information or to purchase tickets for this educational and hopefully enlightening opportunity, contact President Sandi Webster at (405) 722-8749 or e-mail her at sandi.webster@cox.net.

We look forward to hearing from blind and visually impaired people in the metropolitan Oklahoma City area.  If you are sighted and wish to work with or learn more about the blind and visually impaired, don’t hesitate to contact us.
